If you read my last blog post, you’ll have seen that I’ve got a new product range coming out later this month. It’s been pretty exciting working on everything, knowing that the end product can be framed and hung, instead of being used just once and then thrown away. Apart from wanting to create a product that has longevity attached to it, the driving force behind it has come from my love of text: calligraphy, hand-lettering, typography; quotes, lyrics and mixed media art works all leave me feeling pretty inspired.

This year, I chose three words to live by; words that act as a guide throughout the next 12 months. I’m sure you all know someone who’s chosen a word for the year; there’s even a dedicated website encouraging it; unfortunately, I’m not decisive enough to be able to choose just the one.

My first word is Action and so far it’s been working out pretty well. Last year, like every year, I ended up with notebooks and scraps of paper covered in lists, scrawls, scribbles and so called light bulb moments; unfortunately, not a lot came to fruition. But after purchasing Your Best Year 2016 by Lisa Jacobs, I realised I’d been dragging my feet with a number of new projects for way too long and decided that this year, it was time to act.

When I first started experimenting with printing again it felt like I was stumbling around in the dark, eyes closed and arms outstretched with absolutely no  idea what I was doing. When I studied printmaking at college the materials I used were woodblocks, screens, lino and plates for etching. 20 years later when I decided to revisit printmaking, it was like starting all over again; what do I need, where do I get it from and what the bloody hell do I do with everything?

Like most people, my little nuggets of inspiration or full on a-ha moments, always appear when I’m doing something completely unrelated to the a-ha moment I’ve been waiting for. Mine usually make an appearance during one of the following situations; when I’m working out, when I’m in the shower or when I’m out walking. As if by magic, like a fairy waving a wand, this is how my ideas wash over me.

It’s always nice to work on new wrapping paper designs, but even more so when it’s for a special occasion. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I decided it was about time to add a couple of newbies into the mix for all those loved up folk out there.
